The next stage of landslip repairs on Lawrence Hargrave Drive between Coalcliff and Stanwell Park will begin on Monday 15 September.
The repairs are needed to fix damage caused by extreme rainfall and flooding in early 2023, and a Transport for NSW spokesperson said this stage is expected to be completed by late November, weather permitting.
Work will include clearing debris and vegetation, drilling steel rods into the slope and installing a new guardrail.
In total, $1.8 million will be spent to prevent further ground movement on the eastern side of Lawrence Hargrave Drive between Coalcliff and Stanwell Park.
The repairs are being jointly funded by the Albanese and Minns governments through the Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements.
Federal Minister for Emergency Management Kristy McBain acknowledged it has been some time since the initial damage occurred.
“It’s so important that we build back better after a severe weather event to ensure communities like the Illawarra can stay connected and be more resilient in the future,” she said.
“Recovery projects like this take time, but the Albanese Government is focused on ensuring reconstruction projects give communities confidence for decades in the safety and reliability of their roads.”
Federal Member for Cunningham Alison Byrnes said the government appreciated the community’s patience in waiting for the repairs to be complete.
“I know what an important thoroughfare this is for our community,” she said.
“I want to thank everyone for their patience and understanding as these works are undertaken.
“Stabilising the road will help keep our community safe and ensure that the road remains accessible which is great news for local people.”
