A six-storey medical centre specialising in cancer care services is proposed for Loftus Street, behind Wollongong Hospital.

The proposal is in the early stages of seeking approval through the NSW Government’s State Significant Development pathway.

According to a request for a Secretary’s Environmental Assessment Requirements (SEARs) lodged on the Major Projects Planning site, the proposed development aims to address the shortage of oncology services in Wollongong by improving local access to critical cancer treatment.

“ … Reducing the need for patients to travel to Sydney for treatment and supporting equitable, timely and comprehensive care for the Illawarra and South Coast communities,” the request said.

“Notably, the facility will provide a high performance medical linear accelerator (LINAC) to treat a diverse range of cancers with highly precise and accurate radiation therapy.”

The proposal would require the demolition of two dwellings at 20-22 Loftus Street which are currently occupied by a cardiology centre and a residential dwelling.

The six-level medical centre would provide specialist oncology services, a cafe and pharmacy, as well as three underground car parking levels providing 59 car parking spaces for staff and visitors.

“The proposal will not only enhance the health service provisions available within Wollongong’s identified health precinct, but it will also support local job creation and economic activities to contribute to the job targets outlined in the district plan,” the request said.

Once the application receives its SEARs, an environmental impact statement will be prepared and lodged. The application will then go on public exhibition allowing the community to provide feedback.

The proponents say the plans are in line with the aims and objectives of the Wollongong Health Precinct Strategy which was released earlier this year.

The strategy outlines a 25-year plan for the area, anchored by Wollongong Public Hospital and supported by Wollongong Private Hospital, medical suites, laboratories, training and rehabilitation centres.

The oncology centre application comes just weeks after the private hospital lodged a development application for a major expansion.

The multi-million dollar proposal includes a new emergency department, more operating theatres, radiation oncology services and a “medi-hotel” in its proposed multi-million dollar expansion.

Plans also include a birthing centre for Indigenous mothers and a walk-in health centre for the Indigenous community.
