Police allege a man who led them on a high-speed chase from Cringila to Waterfall was drunk, on a disqualified licence and driving dangerously.
The 21-year-old man has been charged with police pursuit – not stop – drive dangerously, driving a motor vehicle during a disqualification period, taking and driving a vehicle without the consent of its owner, and hindering or resisting a police officer in the execution of duty.
A NSW Police spokesperson said the chase began at about 12:30 pm on Saturday (3 May), when officers patrolling Lake Avenue in Cringila tried to stop a sedan without number plates.
“When the driver allegedly failed to stop as directed, a pursuit was initiated, which continued north along Five Islands Road before travelling onto the M1 Motorway,” the NSW Police spokesperson said.
“Extra resources, including officers attached to Lake Illawarra Police District, Wollongong Police District, Sutherland Shire Police Area Command and Traffic and Highway Patrol, assisted and road spikes were deployed on the Princes Highway, Waterfall.”
A short time later, the vehicle stopped on Bundarra Street, Waterfall, after allegedly hitting two police vehicles.
Police said officers arrested the 21-year-old male driver and his 15-year-old female passenger.
“The man allegedly returned a positive roadside breath result. He was taken to Sutherland Police Station where an oral fluid sample was obtained from the man and sent for further analysis.
“Checks revealed the vehicle had been reported stolen from Arncliffe on Friday, 2 May 2025.”
The man was refused bail; the girl was released without charge.
Inquiries are continuing.
