An animal cruelty investigation is underway after an unknown person – or persons – broke into Corrimal High School to kill 29 chickens over the weekend.

A NSW Police spokesperson said officers from the Wollongong Police District attended the school in Pioneer Road at about 9:30 am on Sunday (22 December).

Officers were informed the chickens were secured in a large pen and enclosure on the grounds and were owned by the institution.

The incident is believed to have occurred between 2 pm on Friday (20 December) and 9:30 am on Sunday.

Acting Inspector Allison Guthrie from Wollongong Police District said the incident was deeply disturbing.

“These animals have been subjected to horrific acts of cruelty,” Acting Inspector Lake said.

“It is clear this was not the act of a fox or a feral cat – these chickens were well cared for by the facility and for someone to do this is beyond belief.

“We are urging anyone who may have any information about this matter – or who was in the area at the time with any available dashcam/mobile phone footage – to contact Wollongong Police Station or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.”
