For almost 20 years, the name Andrew FitzSimons was synonymous with Dapto High School.

And now the name of the popular and much-loved school principal will be forever part of the school, after its new outdoor learning area was named in his honour.

In 2023, more than 1000 kids, teachers and parents (as well as his own family) gathered at the school to farewell and thank Andrew when he retired.

“My life has peaked,” he said at the time. “I’ll never have a job quite like this again … I’m leaving proud of what I’ve done but sad that it’s come to an end.”

Wearing his trademark hat, Andrew returned to the school and helped Shellharbour MP Anna Watson unveil a plaque bearing his name.

The Andrew FitzSimons COLA (covered outdoor learning area) was part of a $2 million upgrade of the school’s multi-purpose sports courts.

Acting Education Minister Courtney Houssos said naming the new structure after Andrew honoured “a true champion of public education”.

“The new space will provide an environment where students can engage in hands-on learning, play sport, and enjoy the benefits of time outdoors,” she said.

Ms Watson said Andrew led the school with distinction for 19 years.

“It was heartwarming to see his legacy recognised in such a meaningful way with the naming of this COLA,” she said.

School principal Joel Burnett said the COLA provided students with a versatile space that enhanced their learning experience while promoting collaboration and creativity.

“With the COLA, we are not only expanding our physical learning environment but also enriching our students’ educational journey by encouraging outdoor learning and engagement with nature,” he said.

“This investment in our school infrastructure signifies our commitment to fostering a holistic educational environment where students can thrive, both academically and socially.”
