Residents are being told to prepare for possible flooding as heavy rainfall hits NSW, with up to 250 millimetres possible in some areas.
The Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) issued a Severe Weather Warning this morning (6 June) for the Illawarra and parts of the South Coast, Central Tablelands and Southern Tablelands Forecast Districts.
“Six-hourly rainfall totals between 50 and 90 mm are likely with isolated totals of 120 mm possible on the windward ranges,” according to the BoM.
“24-hourly rainfall totals between 100 and 150 mm are likely with isolated totals of 250 mm possible.”
Wollongong, Nowra, Bowral, Ulladulla, Taralga and Nerriga are among the areas likely to be affected.
Heavy falls are forecasted in the southern parts of the warning area in the morning, before spreading to the northern parts of the area in the afternoon and evening.
The Bureau has also issued a Flood Watch, warning of possible moderate flooding in the Hawkesbury Nepean Valley and the Georges River from Thursday.
As of 9:30 am, minor flood warnings have been issued for the Hastings River, the Cooks River and St Georges Basin.
A surface trough extending from the Illawarra region into the Tasman Sea will deepen throughout Thursday as it interacts with an upper low over NSW.
The conditions are driven by a strengthening humid southeasterly flow to the south of this trough, according to the BoM, which is leading to persistent rain.
“Conditions are expected to ease during Friday morning as the trough moves south. However, there is some uncertainty in the longer-term movement and development of the system,” according to the BoM.
The State Emergency Service advises that during periods of heavy rainfall, we should:
- Keep clear of creeks and storm drains
- Do not drive, ride or walk through floodwater
- Be aware run-off from rainfall could contain debris such as rocks, soil and trees
- If you are trapped in floodwater, seek refuge in the highest place available and call 000
- For emergency help in floods and storms, call your local SES unit on 132 500.
The next Severe Weather Warning is expected to be issued by the Bureau at 11 am today (6 June), while the next Flood Watch is expected at 10 am. Keep up to date with warnings in your local area via the Hazards Near Me app.
