Harbour and escarpment

Do you remember the days when you’d share your holiday memories by sending postcards home to family and friends?

Long before mobile phones were around to capture holiday snaps before sharing them on social media, postcards were the way to save your memories and show off images of beautiful places you had visited.

The Illawarra’s stunning beaches and escarpment views have long made it a popular place for holidays.

And now Wollongong City Libraries has put together a selection of historical postcards in its latest exhibition, which can also be viewed online.

The collection includes postcards of Port Kembla’s Perkins Beach, Bulli’s main street, views from Flagstaff Hill and the original Wollongong Gentlemen’s Baths.

They offer an insight into the lifestyle, fashions, transport and suburbs through the years.

Free copies of a selection of the postcards will be available at all library branches. And as an added interest, the photos are also available as online jigsaw puzzles.

The exhibition is open online and at Wollongong Library, Burelli Street, Wollongong until 30 May.
