President Donald Trump has announced that Illawarra Hawks majority owner Jared Novelly will serve as the next US ambassador to New Zealand and the Independent State of Samoa.
Novelly serves as chairman of Crest Sports and Entertainment and Crest Management.
Politics and sport might seem like an unlikely combination, but it’s understood Jared has taken an interest in politics for some time.
Wollongong City Council Lord Mayor and Illawarra Hawks fan Tania Brown said although the appointment was a surprise, she was confident it wouldn’t affect the Hawks heading into the playoffs.
There are just three games left in the regular season and the Hawks are currently top of the table.
“I know Jared is putting plans in place through Crest to make sure the Hawks are still a priority,” the Lord Mayor said.
“There are all sorts of possible places we could end up but it’s looking good for the playoffs – although it would be brilliant to come in at number one.
“Go the Hawks!”
Jared’s father is oil baron Paul ‘Tony’ Novelly, owner of Apex Oil. Tony has an estimated net worth of $1.4 billion.
In 2022 Jared was involved in a high-profile court stoush over the terms of his $15,000 per week lease on a Sydney apartment.
