The long-awaited upgrade of Yellow Rock Road, west of Albion Park, is due to start in early 2026.
Residents can learn more about the project at drop-in sessions to be held on Wednesday 10 December at Centenary Hall, Albion Park.
In March, Shellharbour City Council received $5 million funding from the Australian Government under the Safer Local Roads and Infrastructure Program to match council’s $5.9 million contribution for the much-needed upgrade.
Shellharbour Mayor Chris Homer said the improvements would upgrade Yellow Rock Road from the Illawarra Highway to Araluen Terrace through Stages 1 and 2, helping increase road safety, pedestrian access and connectivity for the growing community.
“We’re excited to get this vital upgrade of Yellow Rock Road underway,” he said.
“As our city continues to grow, it’s imperative that our infrastructure keeps pace and can match the needs of our community.
“Once complete, Yellow Rock Road will be safer and more reliable for everyone who drives, walks or cycles in the area.”

Construction is expected to begin in early 2026 and take about 12 months to complete.
Key features of the project include:
- New road pavement and upgraded intersections at Wongawilli Street and Hereford Chase
- Improved pedestrian paths and crossings
- Kerb, gutter and stormwater improvements
- Better on-street parking and accessibility.
The drop-in sessions on 10 December will be held from 3 to 4:30 pm and 5 to 6:30 pm, offering residents an opportunity to meet the project team, explore the full design plans and share feedback or highlight any access needs.

Cr Homer encouraged residents to attend the sessions and said they were an important step in working together with the community to ensure the project ran as smoothly as possible and met people’s expectations.
Council is currently in the tender phase to appoint a construction contractor. Once the tender process is complete, another community session will be held early next year ahead of construction.
