Shellharbour Reflections, one of the entries in the Wild About Shellharbour photographic competition.

Shellharbour residents have captured the “wilds” of the area in a photographic competition, from stunning sunsets and sunrises to mountain waterfalls and sandy beaches.

Wild About Shellharbour encouraged residents to celebrate the local environment and the theme of Connecting with Country.

It’s all about exploring personal connections to the natural landscapes, wildlife and cultural heritage of Dharawal Country through photography.

Shellharbour Council is now calling for the public to vote for their favourite photo to decide the People’s Choice winners in the Under 18 and Over 18 categories.

Entries can be viewed and voted for at Shellharbour Civic Centre or online. Voting closes on 18 August.

The People’s Choice winners, along with first and second place in each category decided by a judging panel, will be announced at the end of August.

Here are just some of the entries and a description from the photographer (finalists’ names are anonymous):

Under 18s

Bushranger’s Beauty
On a dive at Bushrangers Bay, I look over to see a graceful grey nurse shark gliding by me. In this moment it is just me and the shark, almost forgetting to snap the picture as I was awestruck by the grace of this elegant creature.

Cute Little Moon
I have lived here since I was born (I’m six years old). My dad takes us on bike rides around the lake after work. I see this view a lot and I love it. The sky is so colourful and pretty and it makes the lake look shiny and sparkly.

Misty Seas
The waves were so intense this morning at Bass Point during my walk with my dad. For a minute there I thought I was seeing snow because of the way the waves were crashing – it looked like an avalanche!

Our Jetty
When we go out to the lake with our little boat we sometimes dock at the Boonerah Point Jetty. In summer it’s good because we get ice creams from the corner shop and play at the park. Then we get back on the boat and do some fishing. It’s a very nice place.

Over 18s

Setting Gold
Was taken at sunset at Bass Point, the first time I caught up with all my best mates after graduating high school.

Relaxed Seal
Seal relaxing and sunning itself in the rolling swells at the back of Bass Point. Not a care in the world, just floating around and posing for the camera.

Warilla Wheels
This photo is a favourite of mine. It is taken in Warilla, next to Windang Island. A simple picture that has captured colours especially the beautiful green, the trademark wheels, water and glorious mountain in the background. It shows the beauty of my local area where I grew up and still live.

Rainforest Renewal: Healing the Heart
We have Macquarie Pass National Park, and no greater beauty can be found outside of this place. No calmer space for healing and renewal, and no greater joy than to walk here with those you love. Touch the earth with bare hands and feel the energy reverberate through your soul. It is endless.

Shellharbour Reflections
Heading out to one of my favourite spots for sunrise, Shellharbour, the colour in the sky was getting more and more intense as the sun neared the horizon. The reflection of the sky and clouds in the shallow pools of the rock shelf are always beautiful but on this morning the connection between sea, land and sky was just perfect.

Shellharbour’s Swans
In the lake of Shell Cove Park was a family of black swans going about their business teaching their cygnets how to live life. I was in the right place at the right time as I got down low to capture this baby black swan amongst its siblings and flora.

Killalea Connections
Nothing speaks of the connection I feel between the land, sea and sky more than watching the sunrise at Killalea Beach, aka The Farm. The reflections of dawn on the wet sand, the early morning surfers enjoying the swell and the sky alive with colour. This is a special place that makes me feel connected to nature, makes me feel at home.
