Mittagong’s acclaimed artist Scott Chaseling has built a reputation for pushing the boundaries of contemporary glass art, which will now be on display at SEVENMARKS Gallery in Kiama in one of his first exhibits in Australia in some time.
Liquid Geometry is an exhibition from 26 October to 23 November and will include a highly anticipated new body of work from Chaseling.
SEVENMARKS Gallery director Cobi Cockburn said Chaseling’s work was highly technical, calling on three decades of experience, with his “pots”, as he likes to call them, having a playful sculptural quality that almost appeared “liquid”.
Cobi said the artist was known for his innovative use of glass, creating pieces that challenged traditional notions of the medium.
“Scott hasn’t exhibited in Australia for a while and it’s his first one with SEVENMARKS,” she said.
“His practice is one of continual evolution and this one landmarked another great phase with his work, which made us go, ‘Well, that’s pretty exciting. Let’s take that on’.
“It’s a rare opportunity to witness Scott’s evolution in his work, and I think an exciting opportunity to see that in a regional location like Kiama.”
Cobi said the Liquid Geometry would feature a series of glass and steel sculptures that riff off the traditions of dalle de verre (or slabs glass), and mixed media wall works that explored the interplay of light, colour and form.
She said Scott’s work was renowned for its meticulous craftsmanship and conceptual depth, inviting viewers to engage with the unique qualities and beauty of glass.
“Scott never fails to deliver. He’s always someone that creates interesting, provocative work,” she said.
“He uses the material in really engaging ways and I think it’ll be full of surprises.”
She said while Scott now based himself at Mittagong, he had exhibited extensively internationally and nationally.
After studying in Australia, he did residencies and delivered masterclasses and workshops abroad, along with presenting solo museum exhibitions at the European Museum of Contemporary Glass, Germany, the Musee du Verre, France and Canberra Museum and Gallery, Australia.
In 2006, Scott was invited as the Levehulme Research Fellow to the University of Sunderland in the UK, later living and working in Berlin, Germany.
A multi-award winner, his work is in many museums and private collections, including the Australian National Gallery, Powerhouse Museum, Museum Kunst Palast, Dusseldorf (Germany) and 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Japan, Palm Springs Museum California (USA), Queensland Art Gallery / Gallery of Modern Art (Brisbane), and the Australian National Glass Collection, Wagga Wagga Art Gallery.
Liquid Geometry will be formerly opened on 26 October from 5-7pm by celebrated Sydney artist and Archibald Prize winner Ben Quilty, with registration via Eventbrite. The opening reception will provide an opportunity to meet the artist and gain insight into the creative process behind the works on display.
The exhibition will then be open to the public each Friday 10am-5pm and Saturday 10am-3pm, or by appointment throughout 26 October to 23 November at SEVENMARKS Gallery at 7 Marks Street, Kiama. Exhibition entry is free.
