Monday 2 June: Police, Marine Rescue NSW and surf life savers are scouring the waters off Port Kembla for a man who went missing after a vessel capsized on Sunday (1 June).
A NSW Police spokesperson said emergency services were called to the breakwall on Seawall Road, Port Kembla, following reports of two people in the water.
Officers found a capsized vessel about 1 km south of Port Kembla Road.
“An 18-year-old man who was on the vessel before it capsized got himself to the shore and alerted members of the public who contacted emergency services,” the NSW Police spokesperson said.
“The second person, a 78-year-old man, was unable to be located.”
It’s understood the search on Sunday continued until about 4 pm, before resuming at 8 am on Monday.
The search is being coordinated by Marine Area Command with help from NSW Police divers, Marine Rescue vessels and crew from Port Kembla and Shellharbour, Surf Life Saving NSW and the Westpac Helicopter.
“About 9:30 am, part of a vessel was retrieved from the water, which is believed to be that of the missing fisherman,” the NSW Police spokesperson said.
“It has been taken to Port Kembla boat ramp for initial examination.”
The search continues.
