If you feel like you’re being watched around the Dapto area, you’re not paranoid – but hopefully the feeling will be short-lived.

Up to 52 cameras will be installed around Kembla Grange, Brownsville, Kanahooka, Dapto, Koonawarra and Yallah by Transport for NSW.

The cameras will collect data to help plan for additional entry and exit ramps to connect motorists in Dapto to the M1 Princes Motorway.

A spokesperson for Transport for NSW (TfNSW) said the cameras captured the quantity and types of vehicles on the road at different times of day, but didn’t record licence plate information.

Data collected will be used for traffic modelling investigations to inform potential locations for additional ramps and determine the potential impacts to the local road and motorway network.

Up to 52 cameras, along with traffic counting tubes, will be installed on Wednesday 20 November for data collection on Thursday 21 November. The cameras will be removed on Friday 22 November.

The tube counters will be removed on Friday 29 November.

Cameras were previously installed to conduct a similar traffic survey on Monday 11 November and taken down on Wednesday 13 November.

The TfNSW spokesperson said TfNSW hoped to complete early planning for the potential ramps by the end of the year.

“Planning work will include strategic modelling of the broader road network to understand the interface between any new south-facing ramps and a potential future interchange at Yallah, including what impact this would have on the performance of the M1 Princes Motorway,” the spokesperson said.

“Opportunities for new south-facing ramps include but are not limited to locations at Kanahooka, Fowlers or Emerson roads.

“The potential future Yallah interchange is proposed to be located at Yallah Bay Road and would allow for northbound and southbound movements.”

Despite all this work, there’s no guarantee any new ramps will actually get built.

TfNSW said funding for the construction of the ramps was not available “at this stage”.
