The Illawarra’s sandwich scene is quietly thriving, offering everything from nostalgic schnitzel buns to artisan bagels and Italian-inspired paninis. Whether you’re after a takeaway or a more leisurely sit-down lunch with a view, these spots elevate the humble sandwich experience. Here’s where to find the region’s finest, from Stanwell Park to Gerringong.
Loaf Cafe, Stanwell Park
91a Lawrence Hargrave Drive
Tucked into the laid-back coastal village of Stanwell Park, Loaf Cafe brings a casual yet meticulous approach to its sandwich craft. The bread options alone (thick-cut wholemeal, sourdough, wraps, or gluten-free) set the tone, but the filling combinations really shine. Their signature Rainbow sandwich layers mix greens, avocado, carrot, beetroot, cucumber, cabbage, tomato, sprouts, house-made candied chilli, seeded mustard, and mayo for unbelievable texture and flavour. Priced between $15 and $17, it’s a steal for the quality. We love to get ours takeaway and enjoy it at Stanwell Tops lookout with a view.
Casa Lu, Wollongong
84C Kembla Street
Since its debut in December 2024, Casa Lu has sparked a frenzy on Kembla Street with queues forming for its Italian takeaway sandwiches. From the team behind Wollongong restaurant K.mlau, this venture swaps modern European plates for casual, flavour-packed schiacciata bread creations. Standouts include the Mortadella with stracciatella cheese, green olives, and pistachio, and the Porchetta which is made in-house with smoked cheese, apple sauce, roasted potatoes, and crackling. At $18 to $25, the generous portions justify the price.
Uncle Earl’s, Wollongong
47 Burelli Street
Uncle Earl’s is a laid-back gem in the CBD with indie tunes, retro posters, and a chilled-out vibe. You’ll find all sorts here, from alfresco diners with their pups to CBD workers grabbing a bite before work. They’re known for their huge selection of mouthwatering toasties, with highlights including the Breakfast Sandwich and Pork Neck Toasty. To pair, they also serve some of the best coffee in town.

Opus, Wollongong
118-120 Keira Street
Opus has long held a place in local foodies’ hearts, and its freshly baked bagels are the reason why. With a perfectly crackly crust, a soft and chewy interior, and gourmet fillings, you’ll fall in love at first bite. The Breakfast Bagel with folded egg, chimichurri cavolo nero, cream cheese, tomato chilli jam, and shredded halloumi is a favourite. Equally compelling is the Pastrami, Egg, & Cheese Bagel, featuring Wagyu pastrami, dill pickles, provolone, pickled mustard seeds, and red-eye mayo. Served in a minimalist space with gorgeous pottery, it’s a sensory experience.
Chickos, Figtree
49 Princes Highway
It may not be the fanciest location sitting straight off the highway, but Chickos is an institution. This self-service spot has earned a cult following for its chicken schnitzel burgers. Juicy, crumbed, quality chicken is served with creamy mayo and crisp lettuce on a soft bun. It’s simple, comforting, and brings a touch of school canteen nostalgia. It’s the perfect pit stop for a quick, satisfying lunch.
Paninoteca Hub, Lake Heights
Shop 1a/20-22 Weringa Avenue
A true hidden gem, Paninoteca Hub is a deli, bottle shop, post office, and sandwich haven rolled into one. Its traditional Italian paninis are the draw with house-cut delicatessen meats and generous fillings for just $14. The freshness and value make it a standout in the Illawarra. Whether you’re stocking up or just passing through, it’s a one-stop shop with soul.

Penny Whistlers, Kiama
5/31 Shoalhaven Street
Perched above Kiama Harbour, Penny Whistlers offers water views matched by a stellar menu. The sandwich offerings rotate, but classics like the Double Smoked Leg Ham Toastie with provolone, vintage cheddar, tomato relish, and mustard on sourdough never disappoint. For something heartier, the Open Steak Sandwich featuring 160g beef eye fillet, aioli, watercress, avocado, and chimichurri on grilled ciabatta is a local favourite.
The Hill Kiosk, Gerringong
98 Fern Street
Crowning a hill in Gerringong, The Hill Kiosk is a summer essential. Its fridge brims with pre-made sandwiches, wraps, and rolls that are fresh, affordable, and ideal for a beach-bound day. The Chicken Pesto Sandwich on ciabatta is a delicious option. With vegetarian choices, decent coffee, and a sweets counter, it’s a no-fuss stop with plenty of appeal.
