A beloved musical will come to life in Corrimal this August, when the Arcadians Theatre Group performs The Sound of Music at the Miner’s Lamp Theatre.

The Arcadians will showcase the enduring charm of the classic musical with its memorable songs and poignant story, which have captivated audiences for generations.

Director Kerrie Hartin, who has played the triple crown of The Sound of Music characters – appearing as Maria in 1986, Elsa in 1994, and Mother Abbess in 2012 – brings a wealth of experience to the table.

She said she was delighted to have the opportunity to guide a new generation through the enchanting story.

“Directing The Sound of Music feels like a beautiful full circle,” she said.

“This musical has always held a special place in my heart, and bringing its timeless story to life from a director’s perspective is both a privilege and a deeply personal journey.”

The Sound of Music tells the tale of Maria, a spirited young woman who transforms the lives of Captain von Trapp and his children against the backdrop of the Austrian Alps.

Audiences can expect a captivating blend of romance, music, and the enduring quest for freedom and happiness.

President of the Arcadians Theatre Group, Steve Sanders, said he was excited to bring the revered classic to the stage.

“We are thrilled to present this iconic musical to our community, offering both long-time fans and newcomers alike an unforgettable theatrical experience,” he said.

The Arcadians’ production features Jesse Cleal as Maria, Greg McLeod as Captain von Trapp and two casts of very talented children.

The final collaboration between Rodgers & Hammerstein, The Sound of Music became the world’s most-beloved musical, with an initial theatrical release that lasted almost five years.

The film adaptation starring Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer won five Tony Awards and five Academy Awards.

The Sound of Music follows the Arcadians Theatre Group’s recent string of successful productions, including Pippin, Big Fish, Sweet Charity, and The Little Mermaid Junior.

The group has entertained the Illawarra with quality theatrical productions since 1964.

The Sound of Music will run for three weekends from 2-17 August at the Miner’s Lamp Theatre in Corrimal.
