Police are asking for any witnesses to a tragic accident in Bellambi to come forward.
A NSW Police spokesperson said emergency services were called to a residential street in Bellambi about 9 am on Wednesday, 1 October, after reports that a three-year-old was struck by a car.
NSW Ambulance treated the boy for head and facial injuries, before he was taken by ambulance to an oval on Bott Road, Bellambi and flown to Sydney Children’s Hospital.
A NSW Ambulance spokesperson said the child is in a critical but stable condition.
Inspector Julia Patton from Wollongong Police District said the driver, a 64-year-old female, was uninjured and taken to hospital for mandatory testing.
A crime scene was established and an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash is under way.
“This was a tragic incident for the family and everyone involved and police are seeking any information,” she said.
“The driver resided at that location and was reversing out at the time. The mother was in the vicinity.
“It was immediately clear what had happened and people nearby attempted to assist.
“The driver is very distressed, as is everyone involved in the situation. There was no relationship between the driver and the child.
“This is heartbreaking for family, distressing for first responders, and a timely reminder to take care when reversing your vehicle.”
Inspector Patton said that although investigations are ongoing, the incident is being treated as an accident at this time.
