Traffic will be disrupted in Illawarra’s northern suburbs in coming weeks to repair weather-damaged roads and rail line.
Work to repair landslip damage to the road and pedestrian footpath on Lawrence Hargrave Drive, about 50 metres north of the Scarborough Public School, will start on Monday (15 July) and is expected to take about three months.
Meanwhile, track maintenance on the South Coast rail line between Sutherland and Thirroul will take place from 9:15 am on Friday (12 July) to 2 am on Monday (15 July). Work will include cutting stabilisation works at Waterfall and embankment and cutting works at Coalcliff.
Heathcote MP Maryanne Stuart said work to repair landslip damage to Lawrence Hargrave Drive and the footpath would involve removing loose soil and rock, installing soil nails under the road to add strength, backfilling to reduce pressure on the slope and spraying concrete to help prevent erosion.
The road was initially damaged during severe weather in March 2022 when a landslip occurred on the downslope section and destabilised the edge of the road, she said.
“Since that time, Transport for NSW has carried out extensive geotechnical investigations, measuring slope movement and moisture in the ground to help develop a repair solution,” Mrs Stuart said.
Further heavy rainfall in April and May this year caused further damage, reducing the road to a single lane.
The repairs will be carried out on weekdays between 7 am and 6 pm.
The existing changed traffic conditions will remain in place, including a single lane closure and reduced speed limit of 40 km/h.
Mrs Stuart said TfNSW was completing repair plans to another landslip site at Stanwell Park between Railway Crescent and Chellow Dene Avenue, where traffic had also been limited to a single lane.
The first stage of the work will include relocating electricity services before major work can begin.
