Traffic is backed up between Tongarra Road at Albion Park and Dapto after a truck crash overnight.

A NSW Police spokesperson said emergency services were called to the motorway at about 10:15 pm on Wednesday (18 February), at the intersection of the Kanahooka Road overpass, after reports of a crash involving two trucks.

The M1 remains slow from Kanahooka Road until the Dapto turnoff.

Motorists are advised to expect intermittent closures.

Officers attached to Lake Illawarra Police District attended along with NSW Ambulance paramedics, Fire and Rescue NSW and Transport Management Command.

“The male driver of a B-double was treated for serious injuries and flown to hospital in a critical condition,” the NSW Police spokesperson said.

“The driver of a rigid truck was also treated and taken to St George Hospital in a serious condition, where he will undergo mandatory testing.

“A crime scene has been established and an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash is underway with the assistance of specialist police from the Crash Investigation Unit.”

The ongoing police investigations are expected to take some time, and motorists are urged to avoid the area as traffic will continue to be impacted in both directions.

Diversions are in place on the Princes Highway through Dapto, Kanahooka Road, and back onto the M1.

This route is suitable for all vehicles including 25 metre B-doubles and will add up to 15 minutes to the average travel time; however, standstill traffic on the M1 leading up to the diversions has resulted in much more significant delays.
