Yellow Rock Road’s upgrade from rural lane to suburban street has received a $5 million dollar boost.

Member for Whitlam Stephen Jones in Tullimbar on Thursday (13 March) announced the Australian Government would match Shellharbour City Council’s $5.9 million contribution to the upgrade under the Safer Local Roads and Infrastructure Program.

“We’re backing projects like the Yellow Rock Road upgrade because we know that good infrastructure underpins strong communities,” Mr Jones said.

“This is about making sure our growing regions have the roads and transport connections they need for the future.

“The Yellow Rock Road upgrade aligns with the Labor Government’s commitment to enhancing local infrastructure and road safety while supporting sustainable growth across the region.”

The project will transform the narrow rural road into a modern, safer thoroughfare, ensuring better connectivity, improved pedestrian access, and enhanced road safety for the growing local community.

Tullimbar is home to just under 2000 residents.

An additional 300-plus homes are approved for the Ravenswood Estate and another 30 homes at Tullimbar Rise. Burgeoning Calderwood is just across the Illawarra Highway.

Yellow Rock Road will be widened to two lanes, be kerbed and guttered for improved drainage and have additional on-street parking installed.

Intersections will be upgraded and a pedestrian refuge and shared path installed alongside improved stormwater infrastructure, signage and line markings.

Mayor of Shellharbour City Council Chris Homer thanked the government for the support.

“I would like to thank the Australian Government for providing this much-needed funding boost,” he said.

“This is an important project for the community to improve a rural road by upgrading it to a safer and wider road with pedestrian and bikes connections.”

Construction on the project is expected to commence later this year.
