Two people are facing a raft of driving and stealing charges after police pursuits across the Illawarra on Tuesday (4 November).
A police spokesperson said Lake Illawarra police were patrolling on Wattle Road, Blackbutt about 7:30 am on Tuesday when they spotted a Camry sedan with allegedly stolen numberplates.
Police allege the driver failed to stop and after a pursuit, they lost sight of the vehicle.
Just after 9 am, Southern Region Enforcement Squad (RES) officers found a Range Rover SUV on Greene Street, Warrawong.
“Inquiries revealed the vehicle was stolen from the Shell Cove area in October,” the police spokesperson alleged.
“Police attempted to stop the vehicle; however, when it failed to stop, a pursuit was initiated before being terminated a short time later due to safety concerns.”
A short time later the Range Rover was seen stopped in traffic on Burelli Street, Wollongong and officers attempted to remove the occupants.
A male passenger in the vehicle was tasered and police alleged the female driver sped off, ramming a nearby police vehicle.
The SUV was found abandoned on Cliff Road, Wollongong and police called in the Dog Squad to search the surrounding area. The alleged driver and passenger were found nearby and arrested.
The man was transferred to hospital for treatment before later being charged with police pursuit – not stop – drive dangerously, not give particulars to other driver, drive recklessly/furiously or speed/manner dangerous, drive conveyance taken without consent of owner, use offensive weapon to prevent lawful detention, hinder or resist police officer in the execution of duty, use motor vehicle displaying misleading numberplate and drive motor vehicle during disqualification period.
He was also charged with two counts of aggravated break and enter dwelling in company – steal for unrelated matters and an outstanding warrant for break and enter and property offences was executed.
The woman was charged with police pursuit – not stop – drive dangerously, be carried in conveyance taken without consent of owner and drive motor vehicle while licence suspended.
