Figtree Sports will have two teams in the running for state bowls honours when it hosts the Women’s State Pennant Finals in March next year.

Bowls NSW recently announced hosting rights for the finals will be shared between Figtree Sports, Woonona Bowling and Recreation Club and Wiseman Park Wollongong City Bowling Club from 11–13 March.

Figtree Sports bowls coordinator Kay Moran says the club is thrilled to be hosting all four finals on 13 March.

What makes it even more exciting is that on Tuesday (19 November) the club’s division one and three teams both beat Warilla Bowls to make it to the state finals and play on their home greens.

Kay, a former Scottish and now Australian bowls champion, is a member of the winning division one side.

She played the day after flying to Melbourne to watch her close friend, fellow bowler Karen Murphy, be inducted into the Sport Australia Hall of Fame.

“It’s going to be massive,” Kay said.

“We’ve only won two women’s pennants flags, one in 1958 and the other two years ago, so it’s brilliant to have two teams playing when the club is hosting the competition.”

Kay said the number of women bowlers at the club had steadily grown and they were becoming a dominant force in competitions.

“It’s a great club for women (and men) and has a great culture,” she said.

The Women’s State Pennant Finals is one of the highlights on the Bowls NSW calendar, bringing together more than 600 competitors representing clubs from all over NSW, including several state, national and international representatives.

Clubs will compete across four divisions, all vying for a coveted state pennant title.

Destination Wollongong has joined as an official sponsor of the event, which is expected to provide a huge boost to the region’s economy.

Wollongong Lord Mayor Tania Brown said it was an honour to welcome the talented group of female bowlers.

“This event not only brings together incredible female athletes, but also gives us the chance to showcase Wollongong’s stunning landscape, community, and culture to over 600 competitors from all over the state,” she said.

“We look forward to sharing our beautiful region with our visitors and wish the best of luck to every competitor.”
