A revised plan for the restructuring of research streams at the University of Wollongong (UOW) has revealed the potential for fewer job losses than initially anticipated among the latest changes to overhaul operations and save funds.
UOW has reduced potential job losses during operational changes to between 85 and 118 positions in its latest update to its transformational plan, down from as many as 185 full-time positions originally set to be axed, in a bid to ensure the institution’s financial sustainability.
The new figure would result in annual savings of between $15 million and $20 million.
The university’s approach to research and innovation was determined separately from other streams, with additional consultation and feedback, with the draft plan for the sector now revealed.
The proposal pitches the portfolio to be restructured and renamed ‘Research and Innovation’ which will comprise of The School of Graduate Research and Research Culture, Research Services, Research Partnerships and Innovation, and Research Platforms.
A new dean position will also be established at the School of Graduate Research and Research Culture, which will also manage research ethics, integrity and compliance.
Faculty support and central funding teams will be unified under one manager to create better cohesion and end-to-end case management.
iAccelerate and the former Innovation and Commercial Research Unit will also be combined under the Research Partnerships and Innovation Division.
“The revised change proposal has evolved considerably,” vice-chancellor and president Professor Max Lu said.
“It recommends a proposed structure and operating model for research and innovation to ensure the university is future-fit to achieve strategic research goals and help to deliver our 2035 vision.”
It comes after changes to other streams announced last month that there would be fewer senior roles across the organisation, but the creation of a new executive role flagged in early plans would still remain in place.
The priority for all operational changes is supporting UOW’s Vision 2035 and Strategic Plan 2030 by boosting efficiency and enhancing academic and corporate services.
Feedback has concluded on all streams except research, which remains open to staff consultation until 18 August.
The Final Change Plan is scheduled for release on 25 August with the decided changes to be implemented gradually to allow time for careful transition and ongoing consultation.
