It’s been half a century since the University of Wollongong changed our region from an industrial hub to a centre for innovation.
Initially an outpost of the University of NSW, Wollongong University (as it was known then) was incorporated in 1975.
It’s turned out alumni from popularly beloved scientist Dr Karl Kruszelnicki to horse racing and rugby league administrator Peter V’Landys and writer Van Badham.
On Saturday 15 November the institution will celebrate 50 years of creativity, culture and change with a free, family-friendly festival.
Kicking off at 11 am the festival will feature live music, games, food and drink stalls and entertainment for all ages across the campus’ lawns.
A spokesperson for the university said it was the institution’s way of thanking the Illawarra for decades of support.
Pacific Avenue frontman Harry O’Brien will headline the live music line-up in the Beats and Eats precinct on Jugglers Lawn and at the UniBar.
Pacific Avenue was formed in Gerringong and is known for a “sun-soaked sound” and energetic live shows that have seen it grow from local favourites to national festival regulars.
“With his soulful voice and laid-back coastal energy, Harry brings the spirit of Pacific Avenue’s sun-soaked sound to the stage — the perfect soundtrack for UOW’s 50th birthday,” the university spokesperson said.
On the Duck Pond Lawn, the IMB Play Zone will keep kids busy with activities including laser tag, a reptile zoo, inflatable obstacle course and presentations and hands-on experiences from Science Space and Early Start Discovery Space.
The Sports Zone on the Champagne Lawn will feature games including putt putt golf and soccer darts, and a heart-stopping giant slide.
Visitors can also browse market stalls along the library walkways and take a campus tour.
“Our free tours will offer a unique insight into what makes the University of Wollongong special,” the university spokesperson said.
“You can discover our world-class teaching facilities and campus, and learn from current students why they love UOW.
“There will also be UOW 50th anniversary merch available.”
