A man who has been on the run from police since October 2024 was arrested in Thirroul on Friday (31 January), after he told a member of the public he was a wanted man.

A NSW Police spokesperson said the 51-year-old man will face court over multiple offences, including break and entering, stealing and fraud in the Wollongong area.

Wollongong police were called to Panmills Drive, Bulli, shortly after 1:40 pm on Friday (31 January), following reports that a member of the public sighted an alleged wanted man.

“Police were told a member of the public was approached by a man, who allegedly said he had outstanding warrants before the incident was reported to police,” the NSW Police spokesperson said.

“After initial inquiries, police alleged the man was wanted by police for multiple offences, including fraud, break and entering and stealing offences, since October last year.”

The man’s alleged crime spree began on 17 October 2024, when a number of clothes worth about $650 were stolen from an SUV parked at a car park of a shopping centre on Lake Entrance Road, Shellharbour City Centre, shortly before 1 pm.

“Police were told the owner of items received an email on a refund of stolen items before contacting the police,” the NSW Police spokesperson said.

“At about 7:40 am on Wednesday (29 January), an unknown man allegedly attempted to break into a home on Alroy Street, Bulli.

“Police were told no items were stolen.

“Just after 8 am on Wednesday (29 January), police were called to an address on Hutton Avenue, Bulli, following reports that a suspicious man attempted to enter a home.

“No items were stolen.

“When police arrived they were told the man left the scene and ran off into the bushland before a perimeter was established and extra resources from PolAir were called.

“Following inquiries, police arrested the 51-year-old man on Pass Avenue, Thirroul.

“Further inquiries revealed the man allegedly stole a bicycle from one of the houses on Pass Avenue before he was arrested.”

The man was taken to Wollongong Police Station where he was charged with aggravated break and enter with intent knowing a person was there, larceny, and four counts of entering the prescribed premises of any person without a lawful excuse.

He was further charged with dishonestly obtaining financial advantage by deception on an outstanding warrant.

He was refused bail to appear at Parramatta Bail Court on Saturday, 1 February 2025.
