Pound pup Akka was howling for joy when Victoria Beahan and James Mebberson brought their dog Theo for a meet-and-greet.
The Canberra couple had been on the hunt for a second husky to be a companion to Theo for months, while Akka – now Jax – was waiting patiently for his new family to find him at the Illawarra RSPCA shelter.
The former Pet of the Week is just four years old, good looking, loves a cuddle and gets on well with other dogs – RSPCA staff couldn’t understand why nobody had taken him home.
When Victoria and James stumbled across his profile, they knew he was the dog for them.
“Theo was a rescue as well. We know how important it is every dog gets a second chance,” Victoria said.
“We thought it was important to get a dog who had a bit of life experience.
“His playful energy and cute profile really appealed to us as well as his age and breed.”
Still, it wasn’t just Victoria and James who Jax had to impress, but also their husky, Theo.
The couple and Theo embarked on a road trip from Canberra to see if the two dogs could become paw-fect pals.
They had their answer the second they walked in the door.
“They were great together straight away, it was so cute,” Victoria said.
“Theo is older, so he tends not to show his emotions, but when no-one is looking they sit next to each other and hang out.
“Having that younger presence in the home has been really good for him.”
Victoria said Jax had fitted right in to their family straight off the bat.
It wasn’t long before he was snoring on the sofa and stealing his new pawrents’ hearts.
“He’s the biggest sweetheart, he’s always willing to receive cuddles and pats,” Victoria said.
“He loves being a couch potato but loves coming on runs with me. We’ve got him a bike connector and he really acts like he’s pulling a sled, he’s in his prime.
“We were obsessed with him as soon as we met him. We keep saying to each other, ‘Look at him, look at him’, and he’s just sitting on the couch.
“He was a little nervous at first. When he took a nap, his eyes would be half open so we knew he was a bit unsure.
“When I saw him fall fully asleep on the couch for the first time, I knew he was very comfortable.”
After successfully adopting two furry family members, Victoria had a couple of words of advice for anyone else considering taking the plunge.
“Do your research, but try not to judge a book too harshly by its cover,” she said.
“Definitely find a dog that will match your lifestyle. Think about what you enjoy doing and find out what they enjoy doing to see if they’ll be a good fit for you.
“Sometimes you just have to take the risk and trust your gut.
“We don’t know how Jax was in the shelter for so long – he’s the best dog!”
