Woman's body found outside Illawarra police station

The body of a 48-year-old woman was found inside her car outside Lake Illawarra police station on Friday.

Police told the media the woman attended the police station on Tuesday (2 December), and spoke to police.

Police have not released details about why she attended the station.

On Friday (5 December), police noticed her car had not been moved.

Assistant Commissioner Joe Cassar said when officers gained entry to the car at about 4:30 pm they found her body in the back seat.

The 48-year-old woman was assessed by NSW Ambulance paramedics; however, she could not be revived.

A crime scene was established and a critical incident team from South Coast Police District will investigate her death.

The investigation will be subject of an independent review by the Professional Standards Command and oversight by the Law Enforcement Conduct Commission.

A report will be prepared for the information of the Coroner.
