Work has officially started on stage one of revitalising Harrison Park in the heart of Shellharbour City, with the focus on transforming it into an active and youth-focused space.

Expected to take up to three months to complete, the project features a multi-use sports half-court, outdoor table tennis, an amenities block, a water station, accessible ramps, pathways, social seating, landscaping and lighting.

The court area will occupy a space at the southern end of the park, near the existing Blackbutt Youth Centre in Cygnet Avenue.

In August, Shellharbour City Council unanimously approved the first stage, which is part of a broader Harrison Park master plan aiming to enhance the park’s role as a central precinct for recreation and community life.

Shellharbour Mayor Chris Homer said the project reflected the council’s commitment to creating inclusive, engaging spaces for young people.

“We’re excited to see Harrison Park transform into a dynamic space where young people can connect, play and relax,” Councillor Homer said.

“We’re also thrilled to see this milestone stage of the Harrison Park Master Plan now becoming a reality.”

Other projects earmarked for Harrison Park as part of the wider master plan include a skate park, new play space, informal stage with terrace seating, upgrades to the memorial space, picnic areas and fitness stations.

“Harrison Park is a prime location in the heart of the city, and our vision is for it to become a key destination and focal point for community activities,” Cr Homer said.

During the August council meeting, Cr Moira Hamilton said seeing Harrison Park firsthand, she was “a bit disgusted with it at times”.

“I’m glad to see this master plan coming to fruition, and I’ll be happy to see this all done,” Cr Hamilton said.

She said she was sure the Harrison family would be happy, with the venue having been named in commemoration of former mayor Robert (Bob) Joseph Wilson Harrison and the first female alderman, Angela Harrison, in 2013.

The two served on the Shellharbour Municipal Council between 1971 and 1991, and are the longest-serving husband-and-wife team in NSW government.

Cr Rob Petreski said he felt there was plenty in the master plan for everyone.

“Being a city-central park, I think it’s important we get the mix right and I think we have,” Cr Petreski said.

“Particularly with the youth centre being placed there as well, I think some of these proposals we have put forward in the master plan certainly work with the youth centre and make that a much more cohesive area and a more beautiful area for everyone.”

The youth area was shaped by extensive community consultation, particularly with people aged 12–24, whose feedback helped inform the design.
