The family of 28-year-old Brandon Yates has pleaded for anyone with information about his death to come forward, as they prepare for their first Christmas without him.

Brandon was fatally stabbed at a unit in Crown Street, Wollongong, at 3:20 am on Sunday, 17 August, 2025.

He was treated at the scene by NSW Ambulance and rushed to hospital, but died less than a week later, on Saturday, 23 August.

Brandon suffered several stab wounds to his chest during the attack.

A crime scene was established, and officers attached to Wollongong Police District established Strike Force Alcalde to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Shantelle Yates, Brandon’s sister, said they were extremely close and the loss of her brother was still being felt intensely by his family.

“He was the most cheekiest, kind person that I knew,” Shantelle said.

“He had a good heart, wouldn’t hurt anyone, he helped everyone … people took advantage of him because he had the biggest and kindest heart out there.

“Seeing him in hospital, turning off his life support and knowing someone would take my brother’s life for nothing … we are the ones who have to suffer.

“I have lost my brother, my best mate. We were a year apart, we were like twins.”

Brandon’s grandmother, Rossilynne Yates, said the family deserved answers.

“It’s totally devastated us all; it all seems so senseless,” she said.

“We just want someone to come forward and give us closure, at least.”

Police have released CCTV footage of a man they believe can help with their inquiries, as they continue to investigate the incident.

The man was last seen wearing dark clothing and riding a bicycle north along Hector Street, Wollongong, around the time of the incident.

Anyone with dashcam footage or information is urged to come forward and contact Wollongong Police or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
