Meet our lovable Pets of the Week looking for forever homes while at the RSPCA Illawarra Shelter
Dog of the week: Stanley
Meet Stanley!
Stanley is an eight-month-old maremma sheepdog puppy with a gentle heart and big personality!
As a member of a breed known for its natural guarding instincts, Stanley is on the lookout for a forever home that understands his unique qualities. Maremmas are not just loyal companions but also natural protectors who often form deep bonds with the humans they hold dear.
Stanley would thrive in a home on a rural property or with a large, secure backyard where he can stretch his legs and run to his heart’s content. Apartments or small spaces just aren’t for him, as he much prefers the outdoorsy life.
Given his breed, an owner with knowledge of maremma sheepdogs or experience with large breeds would be ideal, as Stanley would benefit from further guidance and patience as he navigates puppyhood and beyond.
As a growing large-breed pup, Stanley will need proper nutrition to support his development and daily exercise to burn off his energy.
He’ll also need help learning how to behave out in the world, so a family that can provide consistent training and a safe space for him to retreat to when he feels overwhelmed is a must.
Stanley would do well with another dog in the home to help him learn how to be the bestest dog ever and build his confidence.
He can also go home to a household with children, as long as they are comfortable and confident around dogs, especially those of a bigger size!
A meet-and-greet will be the best way to ensure everyone gets along, and this can be easily organised by calling the shelter.
Maremma sheepdogs are known for their luxurious double coats, which are gorgeous to the eye but also require regular grooming to prevent matting and keep them in tip-top shape.
Cat of the week: Chief
Chief is a lovable four-year-old ginger cat who’s been patiently waiting for his forever home.
He came to the shelter as a stray and has since become a favourite among the staff for his cheeky yet lovable personality.
Like most ginger cats, he has a reputation for being friendly, affectionate and full of character, which is no surprise as ginger cats are known to make some of the best pets ever!
Though Chief is FIV-positive, don’t let that scare you. FIV, or Feline Immunodeficiency Virus, is a manageable condition similar to HIV in humans. It simply means that Chief’s immune system needs a little extra care compared with other cats.
With regular vet check-ups and by keeping him indoors, Chief will live a long, happy and healthy life. FIV is only transmitted between cats, so it’s not a concern for people or other pets.
True to his name and independent nature, Chief would do best in a home with no other cats and no young children. He loves attention, but he also likes to be large and in charge in his own space, preferring a quiet, structured household where he can relax and keep all four paws on the ground.
Chief is an affectionate boy; however, he knows when he needs alone time and appreciates a family that can allow him to have his much-needed chiefly me time when necessary.
Chief, like all cats at the RSPCA, is fully desexed, microchipped and up-to-date with his flea treatments, vaccinations and vet checks. He’s ready to settle into a loving home where he can soak up all the attention and love.
If you’re looking for a companion who will bring lots of unique ginger-cat charm into your life, come meet our gorgeous Chief today! With his adorable boofy cheeks, how could you resist!?
