A grandmother and her baby grandson have made an incredible escape after their car dramatically rolled during peak hour in Dapto this morning.

Emergency service crews were called to the intersection of Unara Road and the Princes Highway at around 8:30 am and found the black Kia on its side in the middle of the street.

The woman and child both managed to get out of the overturned car before Fire and Rescue crews arrived and miraculously only suffered minor injuries from the crash.

Both patients were treated by paramedics at the scene but were not required to go to hospital.

The incident was believed to be caused by the driver taking evasive action to avoid a major collision with another vehicle at the intersection.

The motorist from the other car involved, which was described as a dark or black coloured SUV, did not stop and fled the scene.

Local police are investigating the incident and reviewing local camera footage.

Authorities are calling on anyone with dashcam footage or further information about the incident to contact Lake Illawarra Police on 4232 5599 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
