Australia’s first dedicated female and non-binary axe throwing tournament will kick off in Wollongong this weekend as part of a smorgasboard of axe throwing events held by Battle Axe Throwing.
The ‘BAT Outta Hell’ tournament weekend will run from Friday 30 August to Sunday 1 September and showcase some of the best rising and established talent the country has to offer.
Battle Axe Throwing owner and event organiser Chloe Lyttle said the event was more than just a competition.
“It’s a celebration of community, local talent, and the vibrant spirit of Wollongong,” she said.
“We have a variety of different events to showcase different parts of the axe throwing community.
“This is our first event for BAT Outta Hell, the first women and non-binary tournament in Australia, as well as the first Yahtzee team competition in the country.
“Our leagues are really inclusive, our venue is almost half male, half female, and as a female I think it’s important to throw a spotlight on different parts of the community.
“We’re getting top throwers from across Australia and the opportunity for our members to throw against them is incredible, as well as the opportunity to share tips, be inspired, and grow the community.”
There are a number of sweet prizes on offer as well, thanks to the support of other Wollongong businesses.
Principle Brewing, Dicey Riley’s and Hayter’s Sawmill are event sponsors and winners will take home prizes including cash, Principle Brewing beers, and for one talented thrower a ticket into a qualifying spot for the international axe throwing championships.
The competition and after-party at Dicey Riley’s Irish Pub on Sunday night are all open to spectators.
Chloe said members were buzzing ahead of the weekend.
“We’re a small venue in the grand scheme of things but we have one of the biggest bases in Australia at the moment, and we’re very proud of that,” she said.
“This event gives people the opportunity to come along and check it out in person or via the livestream on YouTube.
“Axe throwing is a bit different; it’s very meditative. You’re doing something physical and you’re really competing against yourself at the end of the day.”
The schedule for the ‘BAT Outta Hell’ weekend on Crown Street kicks off at 1 pm Friday 30 August with the Under 50 Average (Premier) Tournament followed by a Doubles Tournament from 6 pm.
On Saturday 31 August the first cab off the rank is Bucket of Axes – Around the World Competition at 9:15 am, followed by the International Axe Throwing Federation Major Women and Non-Binary Tournament at 2 pm.
Sunday 1 September will begin with the ABC Open Tournament at 10 am followed by the Yahtzee Team Competition at 4:15 pm, then the official after-party at Dicey Riley’s from 7:45 pm.
