NSW Police have charged a 33-year-old man with assault causing death, after a man who was allegedly assaulted at a hotel on Central Road in Unanderra died in hospital.
The 33-year-old man was initially charged with causing grievous bodily harm to a person with intent and affray.
A NSW Police spokesperson said inquiries into the incident were ongoing.
“At about 10:50 pm on Friday 12 April 2024, emergency services responded to reports of an assault at a hotel on Central Road, Unanderra,” the NSW Police spokesperson said.
“NSW Ambulance paramedics treated a 59-year-old man at the scene. He was taken to Wollongong Hospital in a critical condition.
“A crime scene was established, with officers from Lake Illawarra Police District commencing an investigation into the incident with Strike Force Tora established to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.
“Following inquiries, a 33-year-old man was arrested after attending Lake Illawarra Police Station on Tuesday 16 April, at about 4:30 pm.”
“He was charged with causing grievous bodily harm to a person with intent and affray.
“At about 11 am on Wednesday 1 May, police were notified the 59-year-old man had died in hospital.
“As a result, detectives attached to Lake Illawarra Police District attended a correctional centre in Nowra at about 9:45 am on Wednesday, 8 May.
“The 33-year-old man was charged with the additional offence of assault causing death.”
The man charged is scheduled to appear in Wollongong Local Court on Wednesday 12 June 2024.
