Two more men charged after alleged Unanderra assault

NSW Police have charged two additional men following an alleged fatal assault in Unanderra.

Emergency services responded to reports of an assault at a hotel on Central Road, Unanderra, about 6 km southwest of Wollongong, at about 10:50 pm on Friday, 12 April 2024.

Police will allege a verbal altercation took place before a 59-year-old man was allegedly assaulted.

The man was treated at the scene by NSW Ambulance paramedics before being taken to Wollongong Hospital. Police say the man died in hospital on Wednesday, 1 May, as a result of his injuries.

A 33-year-old man was subsequently charged with assault occasioning death and remains before the courts.

Officers from Lake Illawarra Police District continue to investigate the incident, and Strike Force Tora has been established to investigate the circumstances surrounding it.

“As part of ongoing inquiries, it was established a second man, aged 61, was also allegedly punched to the back of the head twice,” a NSW Police spokesperson said.

“At about 4:30 pm on Thursday, 9 May, two men, aged 23 and 31, were arrested after presenting to Lake Illawarra Police Station.

“The younger man was charged with common assault and affray.

“The older man was charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm and affray.”

The two men were granted conditional bail to appear before Port Kembla Local Court on Wednesday, 29 May 2024.

Investigations are continuing.
