A man has drowned at Conjola Beach, north of Mollymook after being pulled from the water unconscious about 4 pm this afternoon, 30 December.
A statement from NSW Police said the man was not breathing when members of the public attempted to rescue him from the surf.
The man was later declared deceased at the scene after paramedics and members of Surf Life Saving NSW South Coast (SLSNSW) attended the emergency.
It’s the third critical incident in less than a week after another man was rescued from the water at Culburra beach near Nowra and taken to Shoalhaven Hospital in a critical condition following CPR attempts by Nowra-Culburra SLSC patrol members.
Seven people have drowned in NSW coastal waters this summer, five of them since Christmas Eve.
Conjola Beach is not patrolled location and police noted it is “a significant distance” from patrolled beaches at Sussex Inlet to the north and Mollymook in the south.
In a second incident on the same day, SLSNSW patrol members from Kiama Downs responded to reports of two people in distress in the ocean. One was able to self rescue while a second was rescued by patrol members in an Inflatable Rescue Boat (IRB).
Paramedics assessed the second person on the beach and they were deemed free to leave without assistance.
Ahead of New Years, Surf Life Saving NSW is asking holiday makers along the NSW coastline to be extremely wary of swimming at unpatrolled locations.
