A stand-in for the new Unanderra ambulance station has opened, and will provide 13 paramedics for the area while two new stations at Unanderra and Warilla are constructed.
The temporary ambulance site will enhance emergency and mobile care for the Wollongong community while planning is underway for the new permanent stations, due to be built in the next two to three years.
Located at Doyle Avenue in Unanderra, the site includes a lounge area, offices, kitchen and dining, amenities and locker room facilities for staff, a communications room and ambulance parking bays.
It will support existing NSW ambulance stations servicing the region in Dapto, Warrawong and Wollongong.
As part of the $1.76 billion Strategic Workforce and Infrastructure Team (SWIFT) program from the NSW Government the Illawarra Zone received 66 additional paramedics.
Member for Wollongong Paul Scully said the temporary station, alongside the opening of the new Fairy Meadow station in 2024, would improve emergency response capacity.
NSW Ambulance Chief Executive Dr Dominic Morgan welcomed the new facility.
“This temporary facility at Unanderra will further support our local paramedics as our new ambulance stations for the area are constructed, by reducing crowding and improving amenity,” he said.
“Over recent years the NSW Government has invested in additional paramedics for the region and this new temporary location will assist us to deliver optimal health outcomes for communities right across the Illawarra region.”
